Anthropology

The Department of Anthropology offers a BA in Anthropology with tracks in cultural anthropology and medical anthropology; a BA in Anthropology with a concentration in visual anthropology; a BA in Global Studies; minor programs in cultural anthropology, medical anthropology, folklore and popular culture, food and society, and Southeast Asia and its People; an MA in Anthropology; a master’s and a certificate in visual anthropology for PhD students; and a PhD in Anthropology. The Department of Anthropology encourages students to ground their research on ethnographic fieldwork while gaining a firm theoretical foundation in the discipline. The program encourages research on problems that cross fields of knowledge, genres, and fields of practice. Special areas of emphasis in the department are provided by visual anthropology, experimental ethnography, medical anthropology, folklore and an interdisciplinary global studies major. All these topical interests are unified by a methodological approach that emphasizes ethnographic fieldwork and thinking broadly about human diversity, historical change and challenges of the future.

The Center for Visual Anthropology Archive

The Center for Visual Anthropology (CVA) at USC was founded by acclaimed anthropologist Barbara Myerhoff, best known for her Academy Award-winning documentary Number Our Days (1976). Dedicated to incorporating visual modes of expression into the academic discipline of anthropology, the CVA worked in conjunction with USC Anthropology faculty through teaching, research and production, along with archiving of visual projects, and sponsoring public events, including the Margaret Mead Film Festival and the RAI Film Festival. Research continues with its archival collections. The Dornsife Center for Ethnographic Media Arts (CEMA) builds on its legacy as a media arts research center for the development of innovative audiovisual work by practice-led researchers working across disciplines at USC.

Policy on Films and Videos Produced by Students

All films and videos produced with school equipment, funding or facilities are the property of USC. Any income from distribution of student-produced films and videos will be used for the benefit of CVA students through production budgets, equipment purchases or scholarships.
