The Department of Medical Education was established in 1963 to support and transform the education of health professionals at the Keck School of Medicine. The department is vital to supporting Keck’s mission of educating physicians and advancing medical education more broadly through its provision and oversight of instructional design, faculty development, policy and curriculum development, student assessment, learner and program evaluation, student academic support, and by conducting and disseminating research in medical education. The department administers the MD program and co-administers the MD/PhD program, and contains the administrative offices of Admissions, Student Affairs, Curriculum, and Diversity and Inclusion.

The department is the home for the Master of Academic Medicine and Master of Narrative Medicine programs and the undergraduate Minor in Health Care Studies. Additonally, the department has a number of dual degree programs such as the MD/PhD, MD/MPH and MD/MBA. The department also sponsors the annual Innovations in Medical Education Conference.
