Applied Mathematics (MS)

This program is intended for individuals who are seeking or currently hold positions which involve mathematical applications, or for mid-career people wishing to improve their skills in applied areas. Specific options in the program include: biomedicine, discrete mathematics, economics, finance and business economics, fluid dynamics, numerical analysis and computation, and systems and control. In addition, students may design their own option to suit specific needs.

On admission to the program the student should contact the program director to set up the study plan. Courses of instruction are drawn from the Department of Mathematics and other participating departments which include: aerospace and mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, civil engineering, computer science, economics, electrical engineering, business administration, physiology and biophysics, and preventive medicine. To be counted as electives for the degree, courses outside of the math department must be approved by the program director.

Requirements for the Master of Science in Applied Mathematics

At least 30 units are required, including 15 units as described below:

Required Core Courses

MATH 501 Numerical Analysis and Computation Units: 3
MATH 505a Applied Probability Units: 3
MATH 505b Applied Probability Units: 3
MATH 525a Real Analysis Units: 3
MATH 541a Introduction to Mathematical Statistics Units: 3
If a student receives a grade of B- or lower in any of the required courses, the course requirement can be met upon passing the screening exam for the course at the master’s level or higher.

Required Electives

Graduate courses (500 level or above) for a total of 15 units.

Electives outside of the Math Department are permitted but must be pre-approved by the program director.

Additional Requirements

To complete the program, the student must choose one of the following options:

Non-thesis option: pass, at master’s level or higher, graduate exams in Analysis and Probability.
Thesis option: register for MATH 594a , MATH 594b and write a master’s thesis. The thesis must be approved by the student’s thesis committee and submitted following the guidelines set by the The Graduate School .
