The objective of this program is to provide academic instruction in statistical theory with a solid mathematical foundation while emphasizing applications to real world problems. Some probability theory is included to provide a rigorous foundation. The program is intended for individuals who are seeking or currently hold positions that involve statistical methodology and practice. A student may orient his or her course of study toward a particular field of application through appropriate selections from the program listings plus elective courses from other disciplines.

At least 30 units are required, including:

Required Courses
If a student receives a grade of B- or lower in any of the required courses, the course requirement can be met upon passing the screening exam for the course at the master’s level or higher.
And one from each of the options below:
Required Electives
- Graduate courses (500 level or above) for a total of at least 12 units.
Electives outside of the Math Department are permitted but must be pre-approved by the program director. Additional Requirements
To complete the program, the student must choose one of the following options:
- Non-thesis option: pass, at master’s level or higher, the graduate exam in Probability.
- Thesis option: register for MATH 594a , MATH 594b and write a master’s thesis. The thesis must be approved by the student’s thesis committee and submitted following the guidelines set by the USC Graduate School.
