Mathematical Data Analytics Minor

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Programs by School

The “big data deluge” continues to change the fabric of research and discovery in both science and industry. The Mathematical Data Analytics minor offered by the Department of Mathematics equips students with the fundamental principles of this field, including practical approaches for handling real data. Upon completion of this minor, students will have a comprehensive understanding of the conditions under which current data analysis methods yield unreliable results and be able to effectively adapt their analyses to use more appropriate methods and thereby avoid erroneous conclusions regarding the significance of their data. While this minor complements the department’s Statistics minor, it requires a deeper mathematical background and leads to a better understanding of the subject matter.

In accordance with the usual requirements for minors, students must enroll in at least four upper-division courses and four courses specifically selected for this minor (which may be the same four courses). Students who use courses required by this minor for the satisfaction of their major program requirements may satisfy the minor requirement of four classes outside their major department by selecting alternative courses from a list maintained by the Department of Mathematics.
